Bike Ride by Old Canal
Monday 11th August
Most campsites have a washing machine and this one is no exception. But here it is behind a locked glass door and when I asked Madame about using it, she was very vague about the time it might be available. So this morning we stuffed a wash-load into our big rucksack and cycled to the launderette we'd spotted in the town and while it was washing we discovered another part of the canal network, watched a boat through the lock and found the old lavoir where all the town's smalls were washed before the advent of launderettes! Beside the lock are several stone objects and on a closer look, they all have random pieces of mosaic on them. This is because the town has been a producer of buttons and mosaics for the last 150 years or so. We plan to visit the museum tomorrow and find out more. The weather was perfect for drying washing and we spent a lazy lunch-time while the sun and the wind did its stuff. The bikes came out again for a very pleasant afternoon along the path between the river and one of the canals. The photo shows a lone fisherman - he didn't appear to catch anything while we had a rest and ate our bananas.

Just back from our very relaxing holiday in Turkey with unbroken sunshine and plenty of swimming at really good all-inclusive hotel. Too hot for any geocaching or cycling but conducive to frequent trips to the bar ! Understand there was a violent thunderstorm in Horsham over the least weekend which saved Matthew from having to come and water the plants ! Looking forward to following your trip westwards over the next few weeks.
